Here are the ingredients that you will need to create your own Detox Mud Mask: Bentonite Clay, Apple Cider Vinegar, Aloe Vera Gel and Water. Take one tablespoon of clay. Add a teaspoon of vinegar and then a squirt of aloe gel and a splash of warm water and mix. The type of clay I use is called Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. I picked it up at a local health food store, but you can order it from Vitacost. I used Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar with the “mother” in it. The aloe that I used is by Aubrey Organics (also available on Vitacost), it is the purest that I could find with no fillers. Keep in mind always refrigerate after opening. Mix together and adjust to achieve the desired consistency. I think it works best when it is creamy but not so wet that it is dripping off your hands and running down your face. It will appear greenish brown in color and have a smell but it shouldn’t be very strong.
After thoroughly cleansing your skin apply a generous amount to the entire face except around the eyes. The skin is very delicate in that area and does not need the mask. Just go to the top of the cheek and let your eyebrows and nose works as a frame around the rest of the eye. Bentonite clay is very popular for mud masks and detoxifies the skin by drawing out impurities. The apple cider vinegar works to correct the pH of the skin and it kills bacteria as well. Because it is very powerful and drying I have added the Aloe Vera because if you do have any active pimples it will help to heal and soothe them. Also it adds great consistency and allows you some time to put it on so that you do not have to rush before it starts drying in the bowl.
After you apply the mask you will start to feel it tighten as it dries. Leave on until it is mostly dry. Do not leave on any longer if it is getting so dry and tight that is is starting to stretch and hurt your skin, usually 15 minutes does it for me. Finally use a wet warm towel to gently re-wet the mask while it is on your face so it is easy to wipe off and remove. Gently pat dry and follow with a moisturizer. I recommend this mask for oily blemish prone and normal skin. Repeat 1- 2 times per week. As always let me know how this recipe works for you, or if you have any other masks that you have discovered. ENJOY!
