Coconut Oil Pulling

coconut oil pulling

Although this is not a method you are likely to hear your Dentist recommend to you any time soon, perhaps as common practices catch up with the latest scientific research you might.  There has been a lot of emerging research validating this ancient method of cleansing.  It is an Ayurvedic method of cleansing the mouth of impurities and promoting overall health.  It was believed that many diseases were actually caused by bacteria in the mouth.

Research studies have shown that oil pulling especially with coconut oil does indeed kill bacteria and microorganisms and can prevent gingivitis, halitosis, and dental caries.  Bacteria in the mouth has also been recently connected to systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and arthritis.  More research needs be done in order to confirm these finding but one thing is for sure.  At the very least, oil pulling will improve your oral health.

Oil cleansing is very simple and pleasant with coconut oil.  Just take a spoonful in your mouth while you are at home doing whatever, and hold it there and swish it around for at least 20 minutes.  After that time spit it out and brush your teeth.  You can do this as often as you like, other oils that work well include sunflower and sesame seed oils.  Always use cold pressed virgin oils, they are the most pure.  I personally find coconut oil to be the most pleasant one to use.

If you make this a  regular part of your regimen, besides all of the health benefits you might find that there is a cosmetic one as well.   Many people find it to be a great way to naturally keep their teeth white.  Regardless of your reason, I hope you begin to reap the benefits of this simple yet effective ancient cleansing method.  I purchase mine for a very reasonable price from Vitacost.  Let me know if you have tried it and what results you noticed!
